THERE are three parts to Vadamos’ stallion career, and yet the Group 1-winning son of the hugely influential Monsun (Konigsstuhl) is only 13 years old. He spent several seasons at Tally-Ho Stud, shuttled to New Zealand, and now he is a busy member of the National Hunt team at Grange Stud where he covered 244 mares in his first season there in 2021. Last year he covered more than 270 mares.

His New Zealand progeny have caught the eye at every level, and his star performer is the top-class mare La Crique. She has won a pair of Group 1 races, the Otaki-Maori Classic and Arrowfield Stud Plate, and she was runner-up in the Group 1 New Zealand Derby. Though not a stakes winner, Caboche was placed in the Group 1 Queensland Derby.

The Karl Burke-trained and Tally-Ho Stud-bred Spycatcher landed the Group 3 Prix de Ris-Orangis and a six-furlong listed contest at Lingfield, and put in Group 1 placed efforts when runner-up in the Prix Maurice de Gheest and third in the British Champions Sprint Stakes.

Vadamos’ earliest National Hunt winners feature a number who have shown themselves to be above average, King of Kingsfield being placed in three Grade 1 hurdle races, Matata running second in a Grade 2 chase, while Stoke The Fire and the dual listed-placed hurdler Calvados are others of note. These results are now reflected in the sale ring, and in January a yearling son of Vadamos sold for £68,000.

Vadamos was based in France throughout his track career and began on a middle-distance trajectory, getting his first win by a wide margin over 10 and a half furlongs and soon stepping up to 12, adding two more wins including a listed contest by three lengths from Behesht. In September of his four-year-old season, his new trainer, André Fabre, brought him back to a mile; the result was a five-length Group 2 success in Germany.

Vadamos trounced classic star Ervedya in the Group 2 Prix du Muguet over the trip the following spring and added a three-length defeat of classic-placed Mr. Owen in the Group 3 Prix Messidor before completing his career with a sequence of four Group 1 performances.

He was a half-length runner-up to Ribchester in the Prix Jacques Le Marois at Deauville, beat Spectre by a length and a quarter to win the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp at Chantilly, then headed down under where, having finished fourth behind the great Winx in the Cox Plate over 10 furlongs at Moonee Valley, he filled the same position in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes at Flemington.

Vadamos is by an outstanding classic sire whose sons have had tremendous success in the National Hunt sector and he is out of a half-sister to Group 1 scorer Valixir (Trempolino).
