DUAL classic winner Hurricane Lane (Frankel) has commenced stallion duties under the Coolmore National Hunt banner at Grange Stud, having been purchased from Godolphin.

Bred at Philippa Cooper’s Normandie Stud and born and raised at Coolmore, Hurricane Lane hails from Frankel’s fifth crop and is out of listed winner Gale Force (Shirocco), a close relative of dual Derby winner Harzand (Sea The Stars). Hurricane Lane was bought for 200,000gns by Godolphin at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

Trained by Charlie Appleby at Moulton Paddocks in Newmarket, Hurricane Lane won his only race as a two-year-old in Newmarket and went on to win six of his first seven starts, the only defeat among them coming in the Group 1 Derby at Epsom where he ran third despite losing both front shoes.

As a three-year-old, Hurricane Lane established himself as one of the best middle-distance horses of his year. He won the Group 2 Dante Stakes over a mile and two furlongs before going on to win three Group 1s in succession – the Irish Derby, the Grand Prix de Paris by six lengths which was the biggest winning margin for some 30 years, and the St Leger Stakes at Doncaster which he dominated.

His final start at three saw him beaten by only three quarters of a length in a strong renewal of the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe while earlier in the season he notched up his fifth pattern race success in the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket.

“Hurricane Lane is a very good-looking son of Frankel with plenty of scope and a good action,” said his trainer Charlie Appleby. “He showed a great constitution throughout his career and was a wonderful racehorse who gave us many great days.”

By one of the world’s best sires, and one of Frankel’s best sons, Hurricane Lane is from one of the best Aga Khan families. His dam Gale Force was a listed winner in France and her half-sister Seal Of Approval (Authorized) gained her biggest success in the Group 1 British Champions Fillies/Mares Stakes at Ascot.

The fourth dam of Hurricane Lane, dual winner Hazaradjat (Darshaan), had seven winners. Her daughter Hazarista (Barathea) was a Group 3 winner who placed in both the Group 1 Irish Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks.

Another daughter, Hazariya (Xaar) was also a Group 3 winner, but she has proven to be the superior of the pair at stud. Hazariya is responsible for four stakes winners, the star being the dual Derby winner Harzand.

This branch of the family was also prominent in 2023 as Hazariya’s pattern-winning and Group 1-placed daughter Harasiya (Pivotal) is the grandam of the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

Hazariya’s stakes-placed half-sister Hidden Brief (Barathea) is another to supply a recent star, her daughter Emily Upjohn (Sea The Stars) winning both the Group 1 Coronation Cup and Group 1 British Champions Fillies/Mares Stakes, and she was runner-up in the Group 1 Oaks and Group 1 Eclipse Stakes.
